Hammurabi inherited the throne of the small Amorite kingdom of Babylon in 1792 BC. The kingdom consisted of the city of Babylon on the Euphrates River and surrounding farmlands. The kingdom had been founded only 100 years earlier. It was surrounded by similar small kingdoms, centered on other small cities. To the northwest was the larger kingdom of Akkadia and to the southeast, down river, was the ancient kingdom of Sumer. The entire region had been controlled at one time by the Akkadian king Sargon, who had created the first great empire of history around 2350 BC. This empire stretched from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean. It had fallen apart by 2230 BC, however, because of internal rebellions and invasions by Gutian tribesmen from the Zagros Mountains to the east.

Around 2000 BC, a new group of nomadic Semites, the Amorites, conquered Sumer, Akkad, and Assyria, setting up new dynasties in the cities and kingdoms of Mesopotamia and Canaan. Hammurabi was the descendant of these conquerors and destined to be the most famous of his tribe.

Hammurabi ruled Babylon for 42 years and presided over the first great Babylonian Empire. He captured both Akkad and Sumer, reestablishing the eastern part of Sargon's old empire. He extended his influence into and over the Zagros Mountains, subjugating both the Gutian tribesmen of the hills and the Elamites on the plateau beyond. He is best remembered for his code of laws and penalties that standardized justice throughout his empire. A contemporary copy of the code survives today, carved in stone.

Push into the area where the treasures were taken and build up a force to recover them. The prestige of your great king remains tarnished as long as these treasures remain in enemy hands.

The Babylonian Empire expanded and enjoyed prosperity throughout Hammurabi's reign. There is little record of rebellion against his rule, which is a testimony to his skill as a ruler over a diverse area. The wealth that followed long years of peace attracted raids, however.

The Babylonian Empire of Hammurabi diminished gradually over the next 150 years. First the Elamites across the Zagros Mountains reestablished their independence, and then the Gutian tribes in the mountains reestablished theirs. Then Akkadia and Sumer split away. Babylon remained a rich city, however, thanks to its trade connections along the Euphrates River. In 1595 BC, the Amorite dynasty of Hammurabi suffered a death blow. In a lightning campaign that is difficult to understand today, a Hittite army marched down the Euphrates and sacked Babylon. The purpose of such a raid so far from Hittite areas of influence is a mystery, unless tales of the wealth of Babylon even then proved irresistible to an army looking for plunder.

Following the Hittite invasion and retreat, Babylonia has been ruled by Kassites for nearly 500 years. Kassite rule is in danger, however, because of Elamite and Assyrian intrusions. Another Elamite army is pressing forward at this moment. If the city cannot be held, you are to save what you can, retreat down river, and build up a new army. Retake Babylon for the Babylonians and destroy the Elamites.

Babylon changed hands several times between 1160 and 1125 BC, but was finally retaken and held by the Babylonians themselves under the leadership of Nebuchadnezzar I. The reign of Nebuchadnezzar I was a second peak in the history of Babylonia, although a large empire was not established. The people took great pride in throwing out the somewhat foreign Kassites and holding off the attacks from Assyria and Elam.

The Kassites took control of Babylon following the sack of the city by Hittites and ruled for approximately 500 years. This period was not one of peace, however. The Mitanni to the northwest were a powerful antagonist briefly, and conquered Assyria around 1440 BC after making peace with Egypt. The Mitanni in turn were conquered by the Hittites around 1370 BC. The Hittites did not venture further south, however. A middle Assyrian empire arose from 1363 to 1000 BC, pushing back through Syria to the Mediterranean and encroaching south against Babylon. A resurgent Elam to the east was also a source of conflict. In the middle of these 500 years, the eastern Mediterranean was overwhelmed by barbarian invasion that destroyed the Hittites, Myceneans, Minoans, and Canaanites. Around 1150 BC, the Assyrians and Elamites began serious attempts to take Babylon.

The Great Hunt, 1120 BC

Scenario Instructions:
從埃蘭人的手中奪回主城一事恢復了巴比倫的榮光,不過國王尼布甲尼撒一世卻宣稱單單奪回主城並不足夠,因為退歸本國的埃蘭人必須受到懲罰。攻擊埃蘭人位於山中的要塞,再找出並搶回被他們運走的馬爾杜克神像(以一個史前古物來呈現)。如果你能夠探出長期為埃蘭人欺壓的民眾,他們將協助你完成你的任務。
The glory of Babylon has been restored by the recapture of the city from the Elamites. King Nebuchadnezzar I vows that recapturing the city is not enough, however. The Elamites must feel his wrath in their homeland. Attack the Elamites in their mountainous strongholds. Find and recapture the statue of the god Marduk that they carted off (represented by an Artifact). Peoples long oppressed by the Elamites will give you aid in your quest if you can locate them.

The raid into Elam was successful and the statue of Marduk has been recovered, but the statue must be returned to Babylonia. There are still bands of Elamites and other enemies loose in the Zagros Mountains who wish to prevent the return of the statue (represented by an Artifact). Bring the statue safely to your frontier Temple where it can be guarded prior to being moved to Babylon.

Objective:  

-  Return the Artifact to the Temple.

Babylon maintained its prestige and independence under Nebuchadnezzar I and for roughly 400 years after. The city was sacked in 689 BC by Sennacherib of Assyria and threatened again in 648 BC.

The peoples of the Zagros Mountains were a constant irritation to the richer cultures in river valleys below. Trade and travel through these regions were always risks. The area was not pacified until much later, when the Medeans and Persians established control of the region.

The destruction of the Elamites and the return of the statue of Marduk to Babylon have brought many years of relative peace to the Euphrates Valley, but the armies are
marching again. The Assyrians are extending their empire and are threatening from the north. The Chaldeans are pushing up river from the south. You are to revitalize
the Babylonian armies and destroy both invaders now encroaching into your territory.

After 730 BC, new rulers in old Sumeria to the south, the Chaldeans, and the old enemies in Assyria began reasserting claims to Babylon. The Chaldeans ruled in Babylon
on several occasions during the next 80 years, and the Assyrians sacked the city in 689. Another Assyrian attack was launched in 648 BC following what they perceived
as rebellion from their rule.

Scenario Instructions:
亞述人被趕離出巴比倫,現在的形勢逆轉了,亞述人已經退回到他們首都尼尼微的城牆之內,摧毀尼尼微的世界奇觀,以為亞述人的強權畫下句點。若有需要的話,打敗任何擋在你路上的亞述盟友。
The Assyrians have been pushed back from Babylon and now the tide has turned. The Assyrians have fallen back behind the mighty walls of their capital at Nineveh.
Destroy Nineveh's Wonder to break the power of the Assyrians forever. If necessary, destroy any Assyrian allies that stand in your way.

The combined assault by resurgent Babylonia and the Medean newcomers from the east took Nineveh in 612 BC, ending Assyrian power forever. In a few decades, the mighty Assyrians went from capturing Babylon (648 BC) and Susa (639 BC) to ceasing to exist as an empire.

Babylonia entered its last period of glory. Nebuchadnezzar II was its most successful king, remembered best for capturing Jerusalem, capital of Judah, in 597 BC. Following the revolt of Jerusalem in 587-586 BC, many residents were carried off to Babylon and kept there for several generations. This was the Babylonian Captivity described in the Bible.

The Babylon of this period was perhaps the most impressive city in the world. The wealth of trade and empire was expended on monuments, ziggurats, and palaces. The giant walls and Ishtar Gate were described in detail by Herodotus and listed as a wonder of the world. The famous Hanging Gardens were built to resemble a verdant mountain and remind Nebuchadnezzar's wife of her homeland.

The final Babylonian Empire lasted until 539 BC. During that year, the people of Babylon surrendered their city to the great Persian king Cyrus. They had grown tired of incompetent rulers and were ready to accept the wise and powerful Persian king.

Historical Notes:

Hunting, 8000 BC

Scenario Instructions:
The Ice Age has passed; plants and wildlife are plentiful thanks to the improved climate. Although the technology of your tribe is still primitive, your hunting skills are excellent. Establish a small village on this Nile Delta island and grow your tribe to seven people.

Objective:
- Create 7 villagers.

HUNTING
To assign a villager to hunt, click the villager, and then right-click the animal to hunt. For example, to hunt a gazelle, right-click it. The villager hunts the animal, gathers food, and deposits it at the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-left corner of the game screen).

CREATING VILLAGERS
Villagers cost 50 food. To create a villager, click the Town Center, and then click the Create Villager button at the bottom of the game screen. After a brief training period, the villager appears beside the Town Center.

BUILDING HOUSES
Houses cost 30 wood. Each House supports four villagers. The Town Center also supports four villagers.  To build a House, click a villager, click the Build button at the bottom of the game screen, click the Build House button, and then click a location on the map. The House is shown in red if you cannot build in a particular location.

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.

Hints:
- You must hunt gazelles to increase your stockpile of food so you can create new villagers. As your population grows, you must build new Houses before you can create new villagers.
- Villagers can move around gazelles and herd them closer to the Town Center before hunting them. This decreases the distance the villagers must travel to carry the meat to the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile.
- Food from hunting deteriorates over time, so it is most efficient to assign more than one villager to gather the meat from a kill.
- Beware of alligators -- they tend to eat unwary villagers who wander near the shore. Alligators can be hunted and provide food like gazelles.


Historical Outcome:
Hunting was good along the Nile and the inhabitants of the region lived well. As a result, population densities increased and the people prospered. The tiny Egyptian tribe passed its first hurdle on the long road to building a mighty empire.

Historical Notes:
The Nile Valley has been inhabited by humans for perhaps millions of years due to the mild climate, the presence of fresh water, and its proximity to southern Africa, where the first human ancestors evolved. Water is necessary for all life, making the river valley a good place to find useful plants and animals. The delta area of the river is especially bountiful. It is not hard to imagine Stone Age peoples making a comfortable life, by the standard of the time, along the Nile.

By 8,000 years ago, the ice was gone and the climate was comparable to what we encounter today. Stone Age hunters would have shared the Nile Valley with a variety wildlife that could be hunted for food. By this time, our ancestors had domesticated the dog and were using spear throwers (atlatls) and primitive bows.

Foraging, 7000 BC

Scenario Instructions:
Hunting has been good along the Nile for hundreds of years but growing numbers of hunters have depleted the wild game. Edible plants are alternative food sources that can supplement or complement hunting. Hunters have reported berry bushes across the river to the east. Find these forage sites and collect food from them. Establish a significant village in this area by building a Granary, Storage Pit, and Dock.

Objectives:
- Build a Storage Pit.
- Build a Granary.
- Build a Dock.

GATHERING WOOD
To chop wood, click a villager, and then right-click a tree. The villager chops the tree, gathers wood, and deposits it at the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-left corner of the game screen). The more villagers you assign to chop wood, the faster your stockpile grows.

FORAGING FOR FOOD
To forage for food, click a villager, and then right-click a forage site (berry bush). The villager gathers food and deposits it at the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-left corner of the game screen). The more villagers you assign to forage, the faster your stockpile grows.

CONSTRUCTING BUILDINGS
You must construct Houses (30 wood) to support your new villagers (the Town Center and each House supports four villagers). You must also construct a Storage Pit (120 wood), Granary (120 wood), and Dock (100 wood). Before you can construct buildings, you must have enough wood in your stockpile.  To construct a building, click a villager, click the Build button at the bottom of the game screen, click the button of the building to build (to build a House, click the Build House button), and then click a location on the map. The building is shown in red if you cannot build in a particular location. If you want to build more than one of the same building, press SHIFT, and then click multiple locations on the map.

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.

Hints:
- You must forage for food to create villagers and chop wood to build Houses to support the new villagers. You can then put the new villagers to work chopping wood to build the other buildings (Storage Pit, Granary, and Dock).
- Forage sites are plentiful across the river, which you can cross at the shallows.
- Villagers automatically deposit food from foraging at the Town Center or Granary, whichever is closer. Building a Granary near the forage sites decreases the distance villagers must travel to deposit the food in your stockpile.
- Villagers automatically deposit wood at the Town Center or Storage Pit, whichever is closer. Building a Storage Pit near a stand of trees decreases the distance villagers must travel to deposit the wood in your stockpile. (The Storage Pit is also a collection point for stone, gold, and food from hunting, which are not used in this scenario.)


Historical Outcome:
The ancient Nile River flooded each year, covering the lands along its course with a fresh layer of silt. These lands were very productive and the Nile Valley was an excellent place to gather wild plant foods. The early Egyptians learned to gather plant foods to supplement their hunting. These new food sources led to even greater population density and the Egyptians grew stronger.


Historical Notes:
It is not clear if our human ancestors were predominantly scavengers, hunters, or gatherers of plant foods. It is likely that they found food where they could, and the mix of methods was influenced heavily by environmental conditions. On grasslands, for example, hunting was the major source of food. Coastal environments favored the gathering of shellfish and seabird eggs, plus fishing from the shore. A river valley or delta, such as that of the Nile, was a particularly productive spot to settle because of the expected variety of fish, birds, game animals, and edible plants.

Over time, humans learned which nuts, fruits, seeds, roots, and other plant parts were edible, perhaps first by watching other animals. Foraging sites in Age of Empires represent all these vegetable food sources. Gatherers learned about growing seasons by remembering the times of the year and places where certain food sources became available. Certain fruits, for example, ripen only during a few months. Nomadic gatherers developed a pattern of travel in order to be in the right place to take advantage of seasonal food supplies. In a particularly rich site, such as a river valley, the many food alternatives made it possible for early villages to be built because food was plentiful throughout the year. The first villages consisted of homes and places where food could be stored and protected.

Discoveries, 6500 BC

Scenario Instructions:
Hunter/gatherers in the Nile Delta and along the river have begun encountering other cultures located to the south up the Nile, to the west along the Mediterranean Coast, and to the northeast into the Sinai and beyond. Parties of explorers are searching the borderlands. You have been sent into a region to the west toward people called the Libyans. According to legend, there are several sacred sites in the area near your campsite. The sacred sites are known as Discoveries and can be recognized by the figure of a white horse etched into the ground. Find the five Discoveries before the encroaching Libyans do.

Objective:
- Find the 5 Discoveries before the Libyans find them.

GROUPING VILLAGERS
To group villagers, drag the pointer over the villagers you want to group (or hold down the CTRL key and click each villager), and then click the Group button at the bottom of the game screen. When you click one member of the group, the other members are also selected. To ungroup, click any member of the group and then click the Ungroup button at the bottom of the game screen.  To assign a number to a group, select a group, and then press the CTRL key and the number to assign to the group. The group number appears in the lower-left corner of each unit in the group.

EXPLORING THE MAP
To explore the map, click a villager (or group) and then click a location on the map.

FINDING DISCOVERIES
To find a Discovery, move a villager adjacent to it. Colored flags indicate which civilizations have located the Discovery. More than one civilization can locate a Discovery.

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.

Hints:
- The more villagers you create, the more protection you have from predators and Libyan attack as you explore the map in search of the Discoveries.
- You must hunt or forage for food to create new villagers and chop wood to build additional Houses to support new villagers. After you have created several villagers, you can group them and explore the map in search of the five Discoveries.
- If you are attacked by the enemy Libyans or predators (lions or alligators), retaliate with your group of villagers, and then resume your search for the Discoveries as quickly as possible. For example, if you kill a predator, don't stop to gather the food from its carcass.

Historical Outcome:
The indigenous people of the Nile Valley pushed back the invaders from the west and maintained control of the river. The Egyptians were destined to become rich and powerful while the Libyans remained a barbaric culture for thousands of years. The Libyans were heard from again, however.


Historical Notes:
Human populations around the world expanded following the end of the Ice Age and gradually settled in the locations where food was plentiful. Once the better spots were taken, competition began over who would hold these locations. A good site might have meant the difference between survival or not during a drought.

Geographic features took on special meaning to those groups settled permanently in an area. Waterfalls or interestingly shaped rock faces, for example, might have special properties associated with them. Ownership of these features was a source of pride for the group. Loss of control to neighbors might have been a blow to the unity or strength of the group.

Prehistoric peoples had an affinity for the natural world that city dwellers of today cannot appreciate. It was critical to the survival of a family group or tribe that they be aware of what was going on around them at all times. They knew the territory around them for miles like we know the inside of our homes. Exploring and searching may have been pleasurable, but it was also a necessity.

Scenario Instructions:
Exploration and contact with other cultures has brought new ideas to Egypt. You are learning new skills, including new technologies for fishing. Advance your culture to the Tool Age to gain access to even better skills and capabilities.

Objective:

FISHING
To fish, click a villager, and then right-click a fishing site (jumping fish near shore). The villager gathers food and deposits it at the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-left corner of the game screen). The more villagers you assign to fish, the faster your stockpile grows.

A Fishing Boat can gather more fish than a villager. To build a Fishing Boat, you must build a Dock, click the Dock, and then click the Build Fishing Boat button. To fish with a Fishing Boat, click the Fishing Boat, and then click a fishing site (jumping fish away from shore). The more Fishing Boats you have, the faster your stockpile grows.

ADVANCING TO THE NEXT AGE
Before you can advance from the Stone Age to the Tool Age, you must have a Town Center and two different Stone Age technology buildings (Granary, Storage Pit, Dock, or Barracks). For example, you might build a Dock and Storage Pit. You must also have 500 food in your stockpile to advance to the Tool Age.  To advance to the next age, click the Town Center, and then click the Advance to Tool Age button. When you reach the next age, you can construct buildings that let you research new technologies and create new boats and military units (as shown on the Technology Tree Foldout).

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.


Hints:
- Before you can advance from the Stone Age to the Tool Age, you must have a Town Center and two different Stone Age technology buildings (Granary, Storage Pit, Dock, or Barracks), as well as 500 food. Constructing the buildings costs wood and advancing to the Tool Age costs food, so you must chop wood and gather food to increase your stockpile.
- The best way to gather food in this scenario is to fish with villagers and boats. You must build a Dock to fish with boats.
- Elephants can also be hunted for food.
- The more villagers you have chopping wood and boats you have fishing for food, the faster your stockpile grows.
- You must build Houses to support the new villagers and boats you create.


Historical Outcome:
The prehistoric Egyptians moved into the Tool Age and successfully kept up with technology advances because of their location. The river and the nearby coast were natural trade routes for desirable commodities, and ideas traveled as well. The combination of rich lands and good trade was a foundation for the Egyptian expansion that was to come.

Historical Notes:
The increase in human population and the competition for good food sites accelerated the advance in technology that had been fostered by the challenging environments of the last Ice Age. Better and more varied tools increased the efficiency of hunters and gatherers, increasing the advantages of humans over other varieties of life.

Anthropologists mark the technological advance of our human ancestors by dividing their progress into eras defined by the artifacts that have survived over the years. The majority of these artifacts are tools, and the oldest of these are made of stone. Later they are made of various metals. The most commonly used era names are the Old Stone Age (Paleolithic), New Stone Age (Neolithic), Bronze Age, and Iron Age. In Age of Empires, you advance from the Stone Age to the Tool Age to the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. Each advance requires that some prerequisites be met. Entering a new age makes it possible to research new technologies and to build new buildings and units.

The Tool Age represents innovation from the large, bulky choppers and hand axes first used as tools. The new stone tools were blades struck from a core stone. The small blades, called microliths, were fitted into handles as knives and fitted onto shafts as arrow and spear points. A new precision was made possible.

Skirmish, 5500 BC

Scenario Instructions:
With new technologies for obtaining food, populations along the Nile have been growing for many generations. Neighboring tribes are moving toward conflict as they strive to control good food lands, tool stone sites, and defensive positions. Recently, raiding parties from Upper Egypt (up river but to the south) have been coming down the river. Food gatherers nearby have spotted one such party. Intercept and destroy these invaders before they infiltrate your village sites and stores of food.

Objective:
- Destroy the enemy tribe.

REVIEWING YOUR TROOPS
You begin the game with an assortment of military units (four Axemen and three Bowmen). To review the capabilities of your troops, click a unit. It's attributes (hit points, attack strength, armor, piercing armor, range) are shown in the status box in the lower-left corner of the game screen. Notice that the Axemen have more attack strength than the Bowmen, but the Bowmen have range, which allows them to fire at the enemy from a distance.

GROUPING MILITARY UNITS
To group military units, drag the pointer over the military units you want to group (or hold down the CTRL key and click each unit), and then click the Group button at the bottom of the game screen. When you click one member of the group, the other members are also selected. To ungroup, click any member of the group and then click the Ungroup button at the bottom of the game screen.  To assign a number to a group, select a group, and then press the CTRL key and the number to assign to the group. The group number appears in the lower-left corner of each unit in the group.

ENGAGING IN COMBAT
Enemy units become visible when they are within your unit's sight. They disappear again if they exceed your unit's sight. Your units automatically attack any enemy units within their sight.

Hints:
- A small war party from Upper Egypt is located to the east.
- Keep your units together so you can take out the enemy one unit at a time.
- Or, split your military units into two groups (Bowmen and Axemen) so you can keep the Bowmen back to take advantage of their range and use the Axemen for hand-to-hand combat.
- Bowmen firing down at the enemy from cliffs or elevation cause extra damage.
- If possible, concentrate your fire on one enemy to kill him quickly.


Historical Notes:
Archaeological evidence suggests that warfare has been part of human life for much longer than we would like to admit. A mass burial in Nubia, south of Egypt, for example, contains the remains of 59 adults and children. Some of the skeletons show evidence of hard blows or arrow points embedded in bones. This site has been dated from between 12,000 and 4500 BC.
The implication of evidence such as this is that prehistoric life was a struggle against other humans, not just nature. People who possessed good hunting and foraging lands had to defend them with force or risk annihilation.


Historical Outcome:
Lower Egypt successfully held off invasion and raids from the south, maintaining its autonomy for many years. Upper and Lower Egypt grew into independent kingdoms. The conflict between the two was resolved late in the fourth millennium BC.

Farming, 5000 BC

Scenario Instructions:
Invaders of Egypt have been stopped, at least temporarily, but migrants and traders continue to enter the region. Those from Mesopotamia have brought the techniques of farming and herding to the Nile region. The future of Egypt depends on making use of the great natural advantages of the Nile Valley, primarily through agriculture. Food surpluses are the basis for increasing population, economic power, and the achievement of civilization. Expand your village through farming and build a surplus of 800 food. Find and control a Ruin rumored to exist on the other side of the Nile. Beware of encroaching Nubians from the north.

Objectives:
- Control the Ruin.
- Stockpile 800 food.

FARMING
Before you can build Farms, you must build a Market. To farm, click a villager, and then right-click a Farm. The villager gathers food and deposits it at the Town Center or Granary (whichever is closer), where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-left corner of the game screen). Farms produce food at a fixed rate, so assigning more than one villager to work a Farm does not increase its productivity. Researching Domestication, the Plow, and Irrigation (at the Market) does increase Farm productivity. Farms eventually go fallow and need to be rebuilt.

UPGRADING UNITS
To upgrade your military units (Clubmen), click the Barracks, and then click the Upgrade to Battle Axe button. Your existing Clubmen are upgraded to Axemen (which are more powerful) and you can no longer build Clubmen, just Axemen.

REPAIRING BUILDINGS AND BOATS
Damaged buildings and boats catch fire. They can be repaired to full strength by villagers. Repair costs resources. To repair a building or boat, click a villager, and then right-click the building or boat to repair. The more villagers assigned to a building or boat, the faster it is repaired.

CONTROLLING RUINS
Ruins are ancient structures resembling Stonehenge that were built by now-lost cultures and bring prestige to the civilization that controls them. Ruins are controlled by the last civilization to move a villager, military unit, or boat nearby. Ownership can be taken away by another civilization. The color of a Ruin indicates which civilization controls it. Ruins cannot be destroyed.

Hints:
- You need to defend against probable attack by the Nubians by upgrading your Clubmen to Axemen and training additional Axemen at the Barracks.
- Food from foraging is limited, so you must build a Market (click the Next arrow to display the Build Market button) in order to build Farms and increase your stockpile of food.
- When you have enough wood in your stockpile, you might consider constructing an Archery Range or Stable and training archers or cavalry units to fortify your ranks of Axemen.
- To control the Ruin, you must cross the river and may have to battle the Nubians.
- After you have neutralized or destroyed the Nubians and secured control of the Ruin, you can concentrate on building more farms to accumulate the food needed to win.


Historical Outcome:
The Nile River valley was ideally suited to farming because of the dependable water supply and the excellent soils that were re-enriched each year by floods. Once the Egyptians learned to irrigate land not directly adjacent to the river, food production and population boomed. Egypt remained one of the most productive grain-growing areas of the world throughout ancient times.
The burgeoning riches of Egypt made it possible to build armies that proved capable of defending the valley and even expanding the rule of Egyptian kings. The Nubians were pushed back but never completely conquered. Lower Egypt (around the delta) fell sometime around 3100 BC to Upper Egypt, uniting the two. The ancient Egyptians never forgot that there had once been two Egypts. Thereafter the ruler was known as the King of Upper and Lower Egypt.

Historical Notes:
The critical advancement of agriculture reached Egypt sometime around 5000 BC, probably brought by immigrants from Mesopotamia via the east coast of the Mediterranean. Gatherers had long ago learned to save some of their seeds and fruits and plant them to assure some food supplies for the following year. But real farming was made possible by the discovery in Mesopotamia of ancient strains of wheat that could be planted in large plots. Over several thousand years, the techniques of farming became more sophisticated to the point that large dependable food supplies could be grown and stored. This and the domestication of goats, sheep, and cattle, were the most critical steps in the take-off to civilization.

The new technologies of food production made the valley only more attractive as a target for poorer neighbors, but the Egyptians were usually able to field substantial armies and defeat any invaders.


Farming, 5000 BC

Trade, 2000 BC

Scenario Instructions:
Now that you have mastered the techniques for farming along the river, your civilization is among the fastest growing and most advanced in the world. Your increasing wealth makes it possible to trade abroad. The Pharaoh requests that you take advantage of your position near the coast to help gather resources for a wondrous new temple he is planning. Your contribution is 1000 gold and 1000 stone. Gold can be obtained by trading with the Minoans, Canaanites, or Libyans, but they are all likely to be antagonistic. Stone can be found nearby.

Objectives:
- Stockpile 1000 stone.
- Stockpile 1000 gold.

MINING STONE AND GOLD
To mine stone or gold, click a villager, and then right-click a stone mine or a gold mine. The villager gathers the stone or gold and deposits it at the Town Center, where it is added to your stockpile (as shown in the upper-right corner of the game screen). The more villagers you assign to mine, the faster your stockpile grows.

TRADING WITH OTHER CIVILIZATIONS
Trading lets you exchange the food, wood, and stone in your stockpile for gold. You trade with other civilizations by establishing trade routes to and from foreign Docks. Trade Boats and Merchant Ships travel to foreign Docks with a cargo of trade goods (20 food, wood, or stone), receive trade goods for gold, and return to your Dock to deposit the gold. The farther you travel to the foreign Dock, the more valuable your cargo and the more gold you receive. Trade vessels can carry a maximum of 20 trade goods. If the stockpile of resources you are trading drops to zero, the trade vessel becomes idle. Trading has no effect on the player you are trading with. The resources you drop off and the gold you receive are not added to or deducted from the other civilization's stockpile.  To trade with another civilization, build a Trade Boat or Merchant Ship (at the Dock). Click the Trade Boat or Merchant Ship, click the button at the bottom of the game screen that corresponds to the resource you want the vessel to carry (food, wood, or stone), and then right-click the Dock to trade with.  To display a vessel's cargo, click a Trade Boat or Merchant Ship. The cargo it carries is displayed in the status box in the lower-left corner of the game screen.  To display the gold paid at a Dock, click the Dock. The amount of gold you receive for your trade goods is displayed in the status box in the lower-left corner of the game screen (shown as the amount of gold/cost).

Hints:
- There is a large deposit of stone to the east. Building a Storage Pit near the mine decreases distance your villagers must travel to add the stone to your stockpile.
- The most efficient way to accumulate gold is to trade your surplus resources.
- You can build warships at the Dock to clear the seas of raiders waiting for the chance to intercept your Trade Boats and Merchant Ships.
- Build Farms and produce excess food that you can trade for gold. You can also build Fishing Boats to fish for food. If you want to trade food, be sure to click the Trade Food for Gold button, otherwise wood is traded by default.
- If you attack your enemies on land, leave their Docks intact so you can continue to trade with them. You can build a second Dock on the northeast coast to improve trade and reduce congestion.

Historical Outcome:
The wealth of Egypt attracted traders at an early date and Egypt was thereafter one of the great trading stops along the Mediterranean coast. Trade was an important component of the Egyptian economy. Major Egyptian exports were grain, wine, food, papyrus, linen, perfume, gold, and manufactured goods (statuary, jewelry, and leather). Major imports were timber, copper, silver, tin, and pottery. Egypt held off the barbarian attacks of 1200 BC but went into decline nonetheless, at least partially because trade came to a virtual halt for many years.

Alexander the Great commissioned a new port capital for Egypt named Alexandria, after himself, which became one of the most important ports of the ancient era. Outside the harbor was built the great lighthouse on the island of Pharos, listed among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It stood over 500 feet tall and its light was visible 30 miles away. Parts of the ruined lighthouse, destroyed by an earthquake, were recently found by underwater archaeologists.

Grain from Egypt was critical to the large populations of both Greece and Rome that could not be supported by local food production. Roman governments sometimes fell when grain shipments failed to arrive and the starving citizenry rioted.

Historical Notes:
Egypt grew quickly to become one of the greatest and longest lasting of the ancient civilizations. Although rarely a leader in innovation, Egypt was remarkable for its architecture, art, and science. The Pyramids were built around 2500 BC, an amazing achievement for the time.

Due to its agricultural wealth, Egypt became an important trading partner. Many less favored regions wanted Egyptian grain and textiles. Egypt lacked timber and wanted wine, copper, tin, oils, gold, horses, and cattle. The mouth of the Nile was an important trading stop for the Minoans, Canaanites, and later traders as well.

Crusade, 1900 BC

Scenario Instructions:
The great new temple has had a powerful effect on the people of Egypt. Priests are revitalized in their fervor and are spreading the word up river and along the coast. You are leading a new settlement in the west near Libya where raiders have been harassing Egyptian towns. These raiders possess a powerful new weapon called a Ballista. Capture the Ballista and bring it to your Town Center.

Objective:
- Capture (convert) the Ballista and bring it to your Town Center.

CONVERTING ENEMY UNITS
To convert an enemy unit, click a Priest, and then right-click the unit to convert. Or click the Convert button, and then click the enemy unit to convert. The unit is converted to the Priest's civilization.  Researching Afterlife (at the Temple) increases the range of Priests for converting military units.  Researching Monotheism (at the Temple) lets Priests convert buildings and enemy Priests. To convert buildings, the Priest must move adjacent to the building. If you convert a building you have not yet constructed, you cannot use the converted building until you construct the building yourself. For example, if you convert a Barracks, you cannot train military units there unless you have already constructed your own Barracks.  Boats are twice as resistant to conversion as other units. Chariots are also resistant to conversion. Researching Astrology (at the Temple) lets Priests convert units more quickly.  Priests must rejuvenate their strength after attempting a conversion. The rejuvenation percentage is shown in the status box in the lower-left corner of the game screen. Researching Fanaticism lets Priests rejuvenate more quickly.  Priests do not automatically convert nearby units, unless they are attacked. When the Priest has converted a unit, he stands idle until given another command. If a Priest converts a Light Transport or Heavy Transport carrying units, the ship is converted but its cargo is not. Converted units maintain their attributes (attack, range, etc.) at conversion; they cannot be upgraded. Technologies you research do not apply to converted units, except Monotheism, Astrology, Fanatiscim, Ballistics, and Siegecraft. Priests cannot convert Town Centers, Wonders, or allied villagers, military units, or buildings.

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.

Hints:
- You must convert the Ballista and then prevent it from being destroyed by the enemy before you can move it to your Town Center.
- You might use your resources to build a large force to destroy all units supporting the Ballista before your Priest converts it. Or you might approach more slowly and use your Priest to convert the supporting enemy units one by one before converting the Ballista.
- If your original Priest is killed, you can mine the deposits of gold in the area to create additional Priests.

Historical Outcome:
The religion of Egypt remained a powerful unifying force for thousands of years. It overshadowed or influenced the religions of smaller neighboring barbarian cultures.

Egyptian religion was not without disruption, however. During the reign of Akhenaten (1364-1347 BC), for example, the old gods and goddesses were briefly deposed. The pharaoh insisted the people worship only one god, Aten, represented by the disc of the sun. He built a new city and temple for Aten and banned the worship of the old gods, causing great disruption. The names of the old gods were physically removed from many inscriptions. The idea of one god only may have influenced later religions. Within a few years of his death, Akhenaten was branded a heretic and the old gods and goddesses were restored.
Akhenaten is believed to have been the father of Tutankhamen.

Historical Notes:
The Egyptians developed a rich and varied religion based on the worship of around 2000 gods and goddesses. Some of these deities were worshipped throughout the country, some by a specific town, and others within the home. Many of their religious beliefs were linked to the sun and the Nile, the two entities most responsible for the agricultural bounty that was the basis for Egypt's relative affluence. The pharaohs, with the help of priests, conducted rites throughout the year to insure the regular rise of the Nile and movements of the sun.

For major deities great temples were built. Each temple was considered a home on earth for the god or goddess to which it belonged. A temple was not a place of worship. The cult statue representing the deity might only be shown a few times each year at special festivals. The people brought offerings to the temple that were collected by priests and priestesses. The people could pray to a statue of the pharaoh, believed to be a descendant of the gods, who might intercede on behalf of the petitioner. Questions for the god or goddess were passed to priests or priestesses for reply.

River Outpost, 1700 BC

Scenario Instructions:
The power of our armies and religion has stabilized our frontiers for the time being. The Nubians to the south remain a threat, however, although subduing them is too expensive to consider. As an alternative, the pharaoh has ordered that a river outpost be placed on a strategic Nile River island to discourage Nubian raiders from coming down river. Locate the large island in the center of the river to the north and build a Town Center and two Guard Towers there.

Objectives:
- Locate Large Nile Island.
- Build Town Center on island.
- Build two Guard Towers on island.

TRANSPORTING UNITS ACROSS WATER
Villagers, military units, and Artifacts can be loaded aboard a transport vessel and moved across water. Allied units can also be transported. Each transport vessel can carry a limited number of villagers, military units, and Artifacts in each trip.

To load a transport vessel, build a Light Transport or Heavy Transport at the Dock, click the unit to load, and then right-click the transport vessel.

To unload a transport vessel, click the transport vessel, click the Unload button at the bottom of the game screen, and then click a location on shore or in shallows.

To display these instructions while you are playing the game, click the Menu button on the menu bar, and then click Scenario Instructions. For more help achieving the objective, click Hints.


Hints:
- There are towers on the island that you must destroy before starting construction there.
- To eliminate the towers, build war ships, or create a small band of infantry units, such as Axemen, to take them down.
- You must advance to the Bronze Age and build a Government Center before you can build a second Town Center.
- You will need to build a transport to carry villagers to the island to build the Town Center. You should take several villagers because the island is inhabited by hungry lions and alligators, which can be hunted.
- When the island is free from predators, you can build a Town Center and begin gathering the stone you need to build two Guard Towers. You can research Watch Towers at the Granary, and upgrade to more powerful towers there.

Historical Outcome:
The fortresses at the Second Cataract were successful in keeping the peace in the region for about 300 years. In terms of American history, this span would compare to the period stretching from the settlement of the Jamestown colony in Virginia to the outbreak of World War I. Around 1600 BC, a new ruling force in Nubia, the Kushites, became sufficiently powerful to overthrow Egyptian rule and destroy the forts. Between 1550 and 1300 BC, stronger pharaohs returned to Nubia and conquered it once more, this time extending their control up to the Fourth Cataract.

Historical Notes:
Throughout Egyptian history, the Nubians to the south (but upriver) remained a potential threat. At various times in Egyptian history, the pharaoh ordered campaigns against this area to move the threat back. The Egyptians periodically advanced further up river, from cataract to cataract (rapids and waterfalls that blocked boat movement) over the centuries. After each advance, Egypt would take control and then gradually lose it, forcing another invasion at a later date.

One defensive tactic was to place fortifications at strategic points. The fortress at Buhen was one of nine built at the Second Cataract around 1900 BC. Its outside wall stood 36 feet high and contained an estimated 8,000,000 mud bricks. Inside the fortress were barracks, homes for soldiers, and stables for trade caravan donkeys.




River Outpost, 1700 BC
