位于英国苏格兰大峡谷的尼斯湖，传说湖中有一种怪物，这给它平添了无穷的魅力，每年都吸引着成千上万的游客。人们给这种怪物起了一个名字“尼西”，意思有趣的怪物。
那么，这种叫“尼西”的怪物到底是一种什么东西呢？还得从无数起的目击报告谈起。
  发现“尼西”的记录，已经快有两个多世纪了。早在1802年秋，一个名叫麦克唐纳的农民，在湖边看见一个怪物露出水面，用它那短而粗的鳍划水，距离他只有45米远。过了100多年以后，“尼西”开始登上报端。1933年，《长披风信使报》报道了约翰.麦凯夫夫妇见到“一只巨兽在尼斯湖中昂首嬉戏”。第二年，伦敦的威尔逊医生拍摄了有史以来第一张“尼西”的照片，在照片中可以看到有一个伸长脖子的小脑袋的怪物露出水面。又过了两年，一部有关“尼西”的记录片问世了。后来，美国和英国的科学家联合组成了‘尼西搜索小组” ，他们把一部有微音器控制的照相机放到湖中，拍到了一个长约两米、呈扁平菱形的鳍，这很可能是“尼西”的脚。后来还曾拍到了“尼西”的全身照。据有关部门统计，亲眼见过“尼西”的人已超过3000人。
  综合各种目击报告，可以把“尼西”的形状归纳如下：长着又细又长的脖子，三角形的小脑袋，背部有驼峰，体长15~20米，全身黑色，行动迅速，活像一只翻过来的小船。
“尼西”到底是一种什么东西呢？科学家进行了种种推测。有人认为，“尼西”很有可能是蛇颈龙的后裔，蛇颈龙出现在1.8亿年前，到6000万年前就灭绝了。由于尼斯湖与大陆隔绝，没有天敌，所以它能够生存下来。
有许多人对上述说法提出质疑，认为所谓的尼斯湖怪，不过是人们对一些正常事物产生的错觉。有人在《新科学家》杂志上撰文说，“尼西”很可能就是在水中嬉戏的水獭，人们看花了眼，把它当成了另外一种怪物。有人还有对水獭、鸟、鹿等动物所产生的幻觉和误会来解释人们在湖中所见到的怪物。有人还直截了当地指出，1934年所拍的“尼西”照片，不过是一场骗局，照片上不过是一只水獭。还有人发表文章说，所谓水怪，不过是浮在水面上的树干。
1986年，有100多名科学考察人员组成的尼斯湖科学考察队，经过4个多月的实地考察，证明在水深68~114米之间，确实有大型动物存在，至于是不是“尼西”，无法确定。因此，尼斯湖里究竟有没有水怪？是一种什么样的水怪？为什么只有尼斯湖里有水怪？这些问题，还在争论之中。为了揭开这一奇谜，英国专门成立了“尼斯湖现象调查委员会”，悬赏100万英镑捉拿这个怪物，不管是死是活，只要能证明它存在就行。现在，尼斯湖怪作为一个专题已经上了网，随时报道最新进展情况。有兴趣的朋友，可以到网上去查寻。

尼斯湖水怪

   尼斯湖水怪可算是世界上最出名的怪物,近百年來自稱目睹尼斯湖水怪的人不計其數,而且不少是專家及較知名人仕,更有不少人把所謂的尼斯湖水怪拍攝下來,一九七五年六月起的一連數個月,更連續有多宗尼斯湖水怪出現的報告.因為尼斯湖水怪受到大家注意,所以有不少調查隊在尼斯湖進行過搜索,雖然調查隊有完善的設備,但始終找不到尼斯湖水怪,其中一支英美聯合調查隊發現到尼斯湖有一些大型的不明物體移動,體積比一般魚類大十至五十倍左右,但始終這些都不能証明尼斯湖水怪確實存在.

      到了一九七二年,該調查隊利用更先進及精密的儀器：包括最新式的聲納儀及水底頻閃攝影器材,但運氣比一切還來得重要,因為尼斯湖水怪神出鬼沒.聲納儀斷斷續續發現了兩個大物體移動,同時間攝影機把移動物體拍了下來,但由於水底非常混濁,所以相片模糊不清.

左圖所示的物體據專家稱很像一巨型鰭狀肢,亦是於凌晨一時四十分左右由水底攝影機所拍得,攝影的時間和聲納儀所測到的時間吻合.
　
　
      到了一九七五年六月,美國波士頓的調查隊帶備更先進的攝影器材以及七二年所帶備的儀器再次到尼斯湖進行研究.這次聲納儀多次錄得主攝影機附近有巨大物體經過,但主攝影機卻拍不到清楚的照片,因為水底的泥好像被攪起來,引致湖水非常混濁.經過這幾次的研究後,始終未能確定尼斯湖水怪的存在.根據各目擊者的描述,尼斯湖水怪就像是蛇頸龍--一種相信早在七千萬年前已經絕種的生物.
   其實要証明尼斯湖水怪的存在確實很難,一方面這怪物行蹤飄忽,另一方面尼斯湖湖底就有如一個大迷宮(左圖),有些地方水深近千尺,湖水又混濁,即使有怪物亦不能輕易發現,因為水中含有大量的泥濘,在水面最多只能看到幾呎深的東西.

其他地方的水怪
一九七七年四月二十五日,日本的一艘漁船'瑞洋丸'在離開尼斯湖幾千里的地方外網獲一具巨大的屍體(左圖),當時漁船正在紐西蘭的海面上,這一個巨大的屍體是在水底的九百尺深處網到,重量達四千磅,長三十二尺,後來屍體一部分被切作研究,其餘的就丟回海中.

一九七七年七月的一天,香普林湖水面出現了一個累色物體,有一個頭和長頸,目擊者第一時間用相機把怪物拍下.一九七一年亦有人稱自己在這裹見過這隻怪物.
　

1861年11月30日,阿力頓號的船員在西班牙開往騰納立夫島途中,遇上一隻巨大的海怪,後來船員用魚叉把怪物叉中,但怪物掙扎後逃去,繩索上剩下一塊四十磅重的肉.
